Mitch Dowd is an Australian brand of underwear that offers undergarments for both males and females. Being one of the oldest underwear stores, it has found great success. Today, its products are available in almost every men’s underwear store.

History

In 1987, a 24 year old man, Mitch Dowd, was wandering in Prahran trying to sell boxers to collect money for an upcoming art exhibition. These boxers were hand painted with different designs that quickly attracted people and he was able to sell over a hundred underwear in less than a week!

Thanks to the word of mouth, he received orders for over 5,000 units from different sectors, making it clear that he had arrived with a bang. Retailers were taking keen interest in his designs that were unique and had already found vast acceptance. Mitch Dowd realized the potential the business held and decided to take this up as a full time business.

The business that started on a small note quickly grew with Mitch’s brother, Jason, joining the business in 1993. This gave the company a boost as it allowed Mitch to concentrate on designs, as his younger brother took control of other aspects of the business.

The company continued to grow in Australia and became a brand to reckon with. Seeing the huge buzz it had generated, ANZ Private Equity showed interest in it and bought it in 2005. This made it clear that the company was destined for big things. In August, 2009, Mitch Dowd Design formerly reverted to private ownership.

Products

The company mainly sells boxers and briefs that are very quirky, fun and hip. Unlike regular brands available in men’s underwear stores, Mitch Dowd does not believe in boring designs and colors.
